Burrowed Banelings: New Meta?

Hi! Just want to make this short post to the SC2 community about the recent Scarlett vs Bomber game, where Scalett was slowly losing as his high yield base was constantly threatened by mass marine drops :O . She decisively made the first burrowed baneling strike (around 25:52), baiting with small numbers of mutalisks, and managing to wipe out a big chunk of his marine army. She then manage to pull of a secondary baneling strike (around 26:57) , when Bomber had no scans remaining. Bomber gged just after being almost wiped by the second wipe.
Have the Zerg players out there done it since? If you haven't, you should try it soon! The feeling of wiping out all those troops with a single baneling, can demoralise an enemy so bad! :D

The DotA/Dota2 Basics

Heroes

Heroes are differentiated based on their attributes, which determine how they fight in combat. There are 3 attributes: Strength, Agility, Intelligence. the Attribute possesed by a hero determines which attribute give him power and damage, on top of the universal benefits of an attribute. Heroes are also seperated based on their faith and loyalty to a certain type of faith, radiant (the good side) and dire (the evil side). Upon entering a game, you do not get to choose which side to play on, but you can choose whether to play as one of the mighty radiant heroes, or the menacing dire heroes. Unlike in the original DotA, in Dota2, being placed in radiant does not limit you to pick radiant heroes, same applies to dire.

Attributes

Strength:
19hp per point, +0.03 hp regen per point, and 1 damage per point for strength heroes

Agility:
1armor per 7 points, 1attck speed per point, and 1 damage per point for agility heroes

Intelligence:
13mp per point, +0.04mp regen per point, and 1 damage per point for intelligence heroes

Just some simple info for those new to Dota2 :) -William

Abaddon, Lord of Avernus

Having a shield and a heal both accessible before lvl 6 is what makes him a good support, but having those maxed out also grant high potential nuke damage, making him viable in the mid lane and offlane. Although he has no active disables, the sole disable he has in the form of his passive is very power and investing an early point in it, especially as a support, can make him more useful in an aggressive lane, compared to his defensive play style with his 2 other defensive skills. His ultimate made me think of how versatile he can be played. It makes him less likely to fall to ganks as normal supports would, and makes him viable as a tanker in the offlane with high armor as well as his shield

LORE
The Font of Avernus is the source of a family's strength, a crack in primal stones from which vapors of prophetic power have issued for generations. Each newborn of the cavernous House Avernus is bathed in the black mist, and by this baptism they are given an innate connection to the mystic energies of the land. They grow up believing themselves fierce protectors of their lineal traditions, the customs of the realm--but what they really are protecting is the Font itself. And the motives of the mist are unclear.

When the infant Abaddon was bathed in the Font, they say something went awry. In the child's eyes there flared a light of comprehension that startled all present and set the sacerdotes to whispering. He was raised with every expectation of following the path all scions of Avernus took--to train in war, that in times of need he might lead the family's army in defense of the ancestral lands. But Abaddon was always one apart. Where others trained with weapons, he bent himself to meditation in the presence of the mist. He drank deep from the vapors that welled from the Font, learning to blend his spirit with the potency that flowed from far beneath the House; he became a creature of the black mist.

There was bitterness within the House Avernus--elders and young alike accusing him of neglecting his responsibilities. But all such accusations stopped when Abaddon rode into battle, and they saw how the powers of the mist had given him mastery over life and death beyond those of any lord the House had ever known.

STATS

Base MS: 310
HP: 587
MP :273
DMG: 55 - 65
ARMOR: 1.38
STR: 23 +2.7
AGI: 17 + 1.5
INT: 21 + 2.00
Attack Speed:

SKILLS

Q - Mist Coil:

Abaddon releases a coil of death that can damage an enemy unit or heal a friendly unit at the cost of some of Abaddon’s Health
Ability: Target Unit
Affects: Units
Range : 800 units
Mana Cost: 75
CD: 5
Heal/Damage : 100/150/200/250 (Magical)
Damage to Self : 75/100/125/150 (Pure)

Our Opinion:
The versatility of the skill is a good thing, as it allows abaddon to save his allies and/or nuke his opponents. This skill allows abaddon to deny himself, preventing our opponents from getting the kill. As abaddon is mostly played as a support, the ability to reduce/prevent the gain of gold n exp for the opponent is useful, as generally he will no be able to deal with enemy carries being a support- without taking into account his W n R skill -TC

W - Aphotic Shield:

Summons dark energies around an ally unit, creating a shield that absorbs a set amount of damage before expiring. WHen the shield is destroyed it will burst and deal damage equal to amount it could absorb to an area around it. Removes certain types of negative buffs and stuns on cast
Ability: Target Unit
Affects: Allied Units
Range : 500 units
Mana Cost: 100/105/110/115
CD: 12/10/8/6
Radius : 675
Duration: 15
Absorbed damaged: 110/140/170/200

Our Opinion:
This shield is a decent pushing skill, allowing your creeps to tank more damage and nuke the enemy creeps at the same time. This skill is also useful in protecting your allies as well as yourself from damage, be it from nukes or early harassment (though it pushes the lane early on) -TC

E - Curse of Avernus:

Abaddon strikes an enemy with chilling power on each attack, causing all units who attack the slowed enemy to gain increased movement speed, along with faster attack speed, for a limited time
Ability: Passive
Affects: Unit
Slow: 5/10/15/20
Duration: 2.5 sec
Bonus Movement Speed: 15%
Bonus Attack Speed: 10/20/30/40

Our Opinion:
Its op. Its worth getting a point in early for a good chase cos he doesn't have any disables, but the one disable he has is so powerful. -William

R - Borrowed Time:

When activated, most negative buffs will be removed and any damage you take will heal instead of damaging you. If the ability is not on cooldown, it will passively activate when your hitpoints drop below a certain threshold
Ability: No target
Affects: Self
CD: 60/50/40
Duration: 3/4/5

Aghanim's Scepter upgrade:
Increases Duration
3/4/5 --> 5/6/7

Our Opinion:
His ultimate is certainly a very special one. The ability to drive towers and even the fountain is certainly something that can't be overlooked. Although there are situation when Abaddon tanks creeps to low health (it has happened before), it is a force to be reckoned with as it can act a second life for you, although many will take note and stop attacking you to prevent you from gain back health, which you can also use to your advantage. -TC

PROS
CONS
- Good defensive support (lvl 2 double heals, strength hero)
- Aphotic shield dispels just about every debuff ( also aphotic refers the moist air at the edge of a coast or lake)
-Can deny himself (no gold n exp fed, and who doesn't like fancy plays)
-Is almost immortal while in ultimate
-Passive Slows target and buffs allies (helps to chase)
- lives in a house near the river, close to runes (only in lore)
-Good for fountain diving
- Requires a certain amount of skill to pilot well as the timing of skills are important

Skill Builds

Defensive Support

First 2 lvls get Q n W
If your enemies are very aggresive, get Q maxed first to deny yourself n save your carry by bodyblocking your enemies, followed by healing your ally n denying yourself, or punishing them by nuking them.
If your enemies are more passive, get W maxed first to for better pushing earlier
Ulti doesn't always need to be added at lvl 6 if you are not very aggressive.
Which gets you

Aggressive Support

Aggro comes from allowing your carry to dive safer.
E skill becomes more lucrative
W protects from damage as well as increasing dmg output
Q is also needed in case it turns sour
Ulti more required as you can tank for you carry
Although W is a very powerful skill, maxing Q first and leaving W at lvl 1 allows you to immediately break the shield when you use Q, which increases your damage output, but by lvl 11, its better to improve your ability to protect your carry using W than to perform cool stunts.

Item Build

The Supporting/Utility Build
Early on, get the courier and upgrade it later along with buying the wards (Observers) and regen for yourself and your carry
Ward the rune and if you feel threatened by ganks, the jungle where the mid-laner will move through to gank.
For Abaddon, boots do not have to be the first item as he already has a decent base movement speed, so you can get a soul ring. For the kind of boots, you can either get Arcane boots or Phase. Get Arcanes if you team are the mana hungry kind, Phase if you need the damage and the chasing/escape boost .
Mekansm and Drums are good mid-game item as it allows you to buff yourself up abit while still contributing heavily to the team. These items let you survive longer in a team fight to be able to keep nuking/healing, distributing shields and provide your passive buff. As the game moves into the late game, you can being to build more tank items such as the Heart of Tarrasque and Assault Cuirass to be able to contribute.
Other items you can get is the Blademail as people what to nuke you down fast to proc your ulti and Vladmir’s Offering to grant a useful early-mid- game buff and lifesteal or early on a medallion of courage.

Starting Off:    Wards + Courier

For early regen items, if you plan on staying in lane, get a Tango and Clarity, while if you plan on returning to base regularly you can get a Health Potion and Clarity to heal your carry in dire situations (get it?).

Early game: Get a flying courier and keep up the good work buying wards

If the lane is doing well (your carry is able to farm decently and the enemy is not aggressively killing you guys off) you should get a soul ring to be able to use your skills at the critical situations

Else start to work on your Mekanism by getting a headdress or bracers for a drums before buying your boots

Mid-Game: Your doing great at buying wards! (I hope)

This is the stage of the game where skirmishes begin and soon team fights. Hopefully your carry is safe as you start leaving the lane to help take down towers and ganking the enemy heroes. Getting your Mekanism/drums can turn the tides of team fights and getting your boots upgraded doesn't hurt.

Now you can start to work on more luxurious items to help become more tanky.

Late-game: Just have fun

Hopefully your team has been doing well at this point because now you can start to build the ‘fun’ items for yourself - Heart and/or AC. Continue with the good work helping your team and soon one ancient will be destroyed.

Embracing the Online Community

Hi everyone,
I will be posting some facts as well as opinions of a few games that I play, as I feel that its good to connect with the online gaming community. I will be quite expressive in my posts, but I am not a pro-gamer or anything like that! Most of my posts will probably be DotA and Dota2, basically some raw info and my experiences playing. I like to receive feedback on my posts on what you agree or disagree, as it helps me with my knowledge and gameplay. Enjoy the future posts and hope it helps! :D
